These Chart-Topping Musicians Prove That Not All Swedes Are Minimalists

Flamboyance is largely a foreign concept in Sweden, where the jante law, a concept that prioritizes collective, over individual, effort and expression, is very much in place. This emphasis on fitting in goes some way toward explaining the appeal of s slinimalism in Scandinavia. Simple shapes in somber colors blend in rather than stand out. The result is that it’s the smallest details that speak the loudest.

But some change might be afoot. In Copenhagen, Kristin Anderson discovered fashions that were “a bit whimsical, wonderfully weird, or some combination of the two,” and we’re hearing about organizational changes at Stockholm Fashion Week, too, where emerging talents will be getting the lion’s share of the spotlight and showing in some exciting venues, including the famed Moderna Museet.

Where there is some precedence for flashy dressing in Sweden is in its music, one of the country’s best known, and most beloved, exports. ABBA’s sky-high footwear and costumes can only be described as OTT. “In my honest opinion, we looked like nuts in those years,” band member Björn Ulvaeus has written. Decades later The Hives would create a distinct visual identity, sans platforms, with their matching, dandified black-and-white outfits. Here, just in time for Stockholm Fashion Week, 13 Swedish musical acts that haven’t played it safe with style.

If ABBA took some iffy chances onstage—Lyrca bodysuits, matching kimono ensembles, and cat dresses come to mind—their eye-catching real-life looks, heavy on platforms and flares, were perfectly on key. As for their denim game, well, it was right on the money. (About those fashion don’ts: Ulvaeus explains them as a numbers game. Costumes that couldn’t be worn on the street could potentially be claimed as tax write-offs.)

Cherry spent much of her youth in the south of Sweden, where she was born, but she came of age musically, and in fashion, when she moved to London as a teenager. (Her first job there, she told The Guardian, “was stapling together issues of i-D magazine with a girl called Scrubber.”) Cherry was part of a group of creatives that included jewelry designer Judy Blame and Scottish stylist Ray Petri, whose concept of “Buffalo” style the singer brought to a wider audience with the release of her 1989 album, Raw Like Sushi, featuring the hit “Buffalo Stance.” The album mixed genres like Cherry mixed her wardrobe, pairing street staples (bombers, high-tops, et cetera) with more fashion-forward pieces and accessorized with bling in the form of oversize earrings and outsize medallions. “I guess I like clothes that make me feel attitudinous,” Cherry told Vogue.

This year marks the Swedish duo Roxette’s 30th anniversary in the biz. Among Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle’s career highlights is the inclusion of “It Must Have Been Love” on the Pretty Woman soundtrack as well as performing at the Swedish Crown Princess’s palace in 2010. Look Sharp! was the title of their sophomore album; it could also be the band’s style mantra. Fredriksson and Gessle worked an androgynous, New Wave style.

3 Steps To Figuring Out How To Talk To Girls In The Daytime

There are a few steps to take when considering learning how to talk to girls in the daytime. It’s not complex, it just takes a little bit of effort…

What It Would Be Like If Latinx People Talked Like White People On Dates

“Do you think you can say something really white to me?”

“Mashed potatoes! Like, the best. Your people, right?”

“Do you think you can teach me how to River Dance?”

This hilarious video by We are mitu flips the script on the weird, confusing and sometimes downright offensive things Latinx people can hear from white people on dates. Or at the office. Or basically anytime.

So, yeah, clueless white people ― the next time you’re about to say anything that sounds remotely similar to what you hear in this video, think about how outrageous it would sound if the roles were reversed. And then don’t say it.

Couple Married 76 Years Will Ring In 100th Birthdays Together

Living to 100 is a privilege not enjoyed by many, but being married more than three-quarters of that time is even more impressive.

John and Vera Peterson, of Freeport, Illinois, will celebrate their 77th wedding anniversary next month and hope they’ll both live as centenarians together.

They first met when Vera, initially a friend of John’s sister, was working on their family farm as a housekeeper. John was immediately “smitten” he tells the Freeport Journal-Standard ― and soon the two were dating and then married.

Not only has it been a long life, but it’s also been a good life, says Vera, who just celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this week.

“Our life has been mostly roses, but there are always thorns, but you have to reach past those thorns and come back to what the attraction was built on and stay with that,” Vera told the Journal-Standard. “It’s what holds you together.”

It’s that same positive outlook she credits for her and John’s longevity. John will turn 100 in March.

The great-great-grandparents say that above all else, love, positivity and keeping fit has kept them going this long and hopefully for many more years to come.

“I have been laughing for almost 100 years, and I plan to keep laughing,” Vera said.

There’s at least one other couple we know of that achieved the same longevity in both life and in their relationship. Last year we wrote about Lisette and Walter Kimmel, a Maryland couple who celebrated not only their platinum wedding anniversary, but their milestone 100th birthdays.

Here’s wishing them all many anniversaries and birthdays to come.

Montreal’s OSM Concludes Couche-Tard Virée Classique with Record Attendance

Last week, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and its music director Kent Nagano concluded a marathon four-day music festival that attracted some of classical music’s brightest stars and well over 60,000 Canadians in celebration of the city’s rich classical music tradition – a tradition grounded, it seems, in the city’s symphony orchestra.

“It’s very important for us, especially here in Montreal where we have such an enthusiastic audience, such a faithful audience, to go out and really play directly to the public,” says OSM music director Kent Nagano. “Over the last five years, the OSM Couche-Tard Classical Spree has enjoyed a steadily growing success,” reports OSM chief executive officer Madeleine Careau, and attendance at over forty concerts held at Montreal’s Place des Arts grew this year to over 30,000. This support, in addition to an audience of over 30,000 at Montreal’s Olympic Park that opened the festival, suggests that the city of Montreal does, in fact, maintain a special relationship with its home-town orchestra.

The OSM began its festival at Montreal’s Olympic Park with Galaxy of Heroes, an outdoor concert celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the Montreal Olympic games and featuring popular orchestral fare from Holst, Mussorgsky, and Wagner accompanying live athletic performances and vintage footage from the ’76 olympic games.

The festival moved to downtown the following day with the debut of an electro-acoustic work by composer Robert Normandeau celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Montreal metro. Organist Philippe Bélanger followed with an impressive (and crowd-pleasing) improvised soundtrack to the silent film For Heaven’s Sake, playing OSM’s newly gifted Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique at Maison Symphonique.

The next two days were filled with an ear-staggering collection of concerts, large and small, in four different Place des Arts venues. Violinst Pinchas Zukerman and pianist Nelson Freire headlined, joining the OSM for orchestral fare (Bruch, Milhaud, Mozart) and solo recitals (Freire offered a particularly intimate peak at the Brahms Piano Sonata no. 3 in F minor op. 5 at Place des Arts’ Cinquième Salle). The OSM played multiple concerts of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony featuring a quartet of Canadian vocalists and the utterly accomplished OSM Chorus. It wrapped the festival with a rare performance of Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony which again featured the new Casavant organ (Op. 3900) at Maison Symphonique.

And throughout in chamber ensembles and small recitals, a host of today’s exciting (truly) and leading musicians marched through Place des Arts. The young and gifted German violinist Arabella Steinbacher led a performance of Brahms’ Quintet for Piano and Strings in F minor, op. 34 and thrilled with Prokofiev. The vivacious Avi Avital, the world’s leading classical mandolinist, played Vivaldi and Beethoven in both solo recital and with OSM. Spanish cellist Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas played Schumann and Chopin with Canadian pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin and Franck and Piazzolla with pianist Suzanne Blondin. New York pianist Gille Vonsattel brought gravitas to Vivaldi, Beethoven, and Debussy and offered a compelling partner to Ms. Steinbacher in Prokoviev and Mozart. OSM concertmaster Andrew Wan and other OSM instrumentalists appeared frequently, as did the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

OSM’s Couche-Tard Virée Classique is a pretty impressive undertaking – some remarkable music-making over the course of a very short time. At its most intense, my listening began with Vivaldi at 10:30am, and concluded with Saint-Saëns at 11:00pm. Between were impressive performances that delighted the ear.

The following are short reviews and excerpts of select OSM Couche-Tard Virée Classique performances.

__________

For Heaven’s Sake with Improvised Organ Soundtrack by Philippe Bélanger

In an interview with ZEALnyc moments before he began his performance, organist Philippe Bélanger claimed that, like his audience, he had “no idea what he would hear” during an improvised soundtrack to the silent film For Heaven’s Sake. I suspect this is a bit of showmanship on the part of Bélanger, who accompanied the film from Maison Symphonique on the newly gifted Casavant (Op. 3900) Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique. Whether Mr. Bélanger’s performance was truly improvised or carefully planned, it was unarguably thrilling. The improvised soundtrack, taking its cue from the film, was nicely shaped, entertaining, and at its moments of conflict, compelling. Mr. Bélanger reports that accompanying For Heaven’s Sake, which clocks in at just under one hour, is a relatively simple task when compared to the lengthier Ben Hur (over two and a half hours) which, with its long chariot race, is particularly popular with silent movie audiences.

Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Beethoven Ninth Symphony, Kent Nagano Conducting

OSM played multiple performances of Beethoven’s popular symphony, offering a showcase not only for the orchestra and its relatively new Maison Symphonique, but for a quartet of skilled Canadian vocalists and the very fine Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Chorus. Nagano drove the performance with characteristic passion and detail, and the OSM retains its exciting sound in its home (I had last heard them at Carnegie Hall, “a sound with tremendous polish but little varnish, and the result is exciting”). Exciting also was to hear the fine OSM Chorus, with a sound that is also polished with impressive diction and a passion to meet its orchestral partner. The Maison Symphonique provides an arresting environment for the chorus, with lighting that cinematically highlights individual choristers. (I suspect that this lighting was working on stage left, but not on stage right on the evening of August 12.) And while the chorus placement is visually impressive, the distance from the house makes the choral sound slightly remote. This is a small complaint, and both the OSM and its chorus offered a superb performance of this orchestral favorite.

Johannes Brahms Quintet for Piano and Strings in F minor, op. 34

Performances outside of Maison Symphonique began impressively at Place des Arts’ Cinquième Salle with a touching performance of Brahms’ grand masterpiece. Young German violin sensation Arabella Steinbacher began the first of three Virée Classique appearances leading an intimately sublime performance with Andrew Wan (violin), Neal Gripp (viola), Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas (cello), and pianist Gille Vonsattel. The small hall provided the listener with close look at both the work of this impressive roster of individual players and the ensemble, in a reading that was nicely shaped and texturally rich.

Viva Vivaldi! with Pinchas Zukerman, OSM and Guests

In a star-studded morning concert, the biggest star of this salute to Vivaldi may have been Maison Symphonique itself, which with its rich wood interior and oscillating curved walls, is an impressively happy environment for the smaller forces of baroque ensembles. Within the relatively large space, the sound of the morning’s smaller ensembles danced deep in the middle of the hall, providing a sound that while nicely blended, brought the appearance that the performers were considerably closer to the ear than their actual physical distance. OSM chief operating officer Marie-Josée Desrochers says that this particular acoustic effect has influenced programming in future seasons, with next year’s highlighting the symphonies of Haydn.

On this morning, Vivaldi did indeed live. Both pianist Gille Vonsattel and cellist Amanda Forsyth gave sure accounts of his music for keyboard and cello. Of particular charm was mandolinist Avi Avital, who brought a plucky reading of Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in A minor RV 356 adapted for mandolin. Mr. Avital is the world’s leading classical mandolinist, and hearing him perform, it is hard to believe that the instrument won’t become a standard guest in concert halls, just as the guitar joined its ranks several decades ago. Mr. Avital’s playing is secure and exciting with sure tuning and powerful interpretive instincts – both sensitive and spunky. Look for Mr. Avital at a concert hall near you – very soon.

Steinbacher and Vonsattel play Mozart & Prokofiev

Both outstanding soloists returned to the intimate Cinquiéme Salle for an impressive recital of violin and piano. It may have been just past noon, but following Mozart’s Violin and Piano Sonata no. 18 in G major, K. 301, the duo performed an impassioned reading of Prokofiev’s Violin and Piano Sonata no. 1 in F minor, op. 80. In an interview with ZEALnyc, Steinbacher reveals that Prokofiev and Shostakovich are composers particularly close to her heart, and this reading of Prokofiev, played on the 300 year old Booth Stradivarius which has been her performing instrument for over a decade, cast no doubt as to her understanding of this music. Steinbacher plays with both technical acumen and lovely passion. Her technique is both nimble and secure, and she pulls from her instrument a huge range of sound, all securely grounded in tuning and tone. Her interprative pallette is equally reaching – she plays Mozart with as much intention as she does the often emotionally wrenching music of Prokofiev. Superstars reign in classical music, and look for Steinbacher (following Perlman, Bell, Mutter, Zukerman) to join this list very soon. In Vonsattel, she found a happy partner who plays with impressive skills of his own and empathetic sensitivity.

Spanish Cellist Adolof Gutiérrez Arenas plays Franck and Piazzolla

The young Spanish cellist Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas made several appearances at OSM’s Couche-Tard Virée Classique including an early and successful collaboration with Arabella Steinbacher, Andrew Wan, neal Gripp, and Gilles Vonsattel in a compelling performance of the Brahms Quintet for Piano and Strings in F minor, op. 34. Later, he joined pianists Charles Richard-Hamelin and Suzanne Blondin for duo recitals. With Blondin, he played Franck’s monumental Violin Sonata in A Major (cello version) and Astor Piazzolla’s Le grand tango. At this stage, Arenas’ sound isn’t huge, but it is expressive – important for the work of both Franck and Piazzolla. His tuning is a tad rich (though more contained in the Brahms earlier in the week) and his heartfelt interpretation of Franck suffered slightly as a result. His interpretation of Piazzolla, on the other hand, was as moving as it was accurate. Look for this talented soloist down the road.

Camille Saint-Saëns with OSM and Kent Nagano

The final concert of the festival again featured the Maison Symphonique’s organ, now in a night of orchestral music by Camille Saint-Saëns. OSM has spent time with the composer of late, last year recording his three violin concertos with OSM concert master Andrew Wan as soloist. Saint-Saëns Tarentelle for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra op. 6 began the festival’s final performance and featured OSM principals Timothy Hutchins (flute) and Todd Cope (clarinet).

But frankly, the star of the night was, again, the Maison Symphonique and its Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique. More about these two.

The Maison Symphonique was inaugurated in 2011. With a seating capacity of 2,100, 70% of its interior is finished in blond wood, fostering a warmth of sound and a visually cool, modern interior. European seating in the house, though perhaps inconvenient to concert-goers, creates a uniform visual line in the hall while chorus seating behind the stage mirrors the seating levels within the house. This stage seating builds to a dramatic reveal of the organ, the pipes of which (the largest playfully inverted as they hang from the ceiling) act as frame and proscenium to the stage below.

Inaugurated in 2014 and at a reported cost of $ 4 million, Maison Symphonique’s Grand Orgue Pierre-Bélanger is the product of the French organ builder Casavant and includes nearly 6,500 pipes. The organ was donated by Jacqueline Desmarais as a tribute to OSM’s founder and first general manager who ran the OSM from 1939 to 1970. Many a U.S. concert hall looks to electronic instruments these days to fulfill organ needs, and it is a stark reminder of the Montreal’s European personality that, in such a time and at such an expense, this organ was commissioned and installed. The organ console sits dramatically high over the stage, producing more visual excitement in the hall as the organist reigns over proceedings, while at the same time engulfed by the instrument he plays.

2016-08-27-1472315749-4191363-GrandOrgueZEALnyc.jpg

And over the course of OSM’s Virée Classique, the Grand Orgue established itself as a truly fine instrument. Distinctly flexible at the hands of Philippe Bélanger earlier in the week, with Saint-Saëns the organ demonstrated its subtlety. The composer’s Organ Symphony is by no means a concerto – the instrument is not featured as a solo instrument. Rather, it acts as another orchestral ‘section’ adding new tonal color, and in this case an excitingly rich palette. Organist Jean-Willy Kunz is masterful in his registration choices, and the organ acted as a delightful community member – adding a compelling non-orchestral color without dominating. The first of the organ entrances was sublime – soft, delicate strings blended with the orchestra to create an utterly unique sound – a sound that beat in waves. As the piece moved toward completion, its chordal language moved to that of the organ, which rose appropriately to the dominant color.

Throughout, OSM’s unique sound thrilled. Their strings are firm, emphatic and beautiful. The brass and winds, proud and confident. The balance among this youthful collection of musicians is spot on, but it is a balance in which individual components maintain a bright presence. In an era when individual sounds among orchestras become rare, OSM under the leadership of Kent Nagano is a happy exception.

What Women Should No Longer Wear After Age 50

There’s a lot of ink these days in the blogosphere about how older women should be able to “wear whatever the f— they want.” Well, of course, I applaud the sentiment and the theory. But in practice, for me at least, there are some things in my closet that have outlived their usefulness. I have thereby made the conscious decision to be a bit more moderate in my dress than I was in my 40s. That doesn’t mean I intend to go gently into that good night. On the contrary, I intend to continue to annoy people by being more visible every year. But I also refuse to go as a paler version of my younger self.

So — out go the above-the-knee miniskirts. I will wear a shorter tunic but only with tights or leggings or skinny pants. Out with the crop tops (does anyone NEED to see my scars?) and four-inch platforms. Yes, I know platforms are back, but the spectacle of me toppling over and breaking an osteoporotic hip isn’t worth a few more inches of height, in spite of the fact I’m shrinking as I write this. There are plenty of wedge-soled shoes and slightly platformed sandals and sneakers that give me a little height but that share a closer relationship with the ground. And speaking of relating to the ground, as gravity has contributed to the spread of my metatarsals I’ll be damned if I’m going to cram my pre-bunioned toes into pointy shoes. I’d rather build an entire outfit around a pair of very comfortable and expensive flats than sacrifice a fancier outfit for a constant grimace.

I’ve also let go of a lot of the cute hair ornaments I wore when my hair was longer, straighter and sexier because, face it, my hair isn’t ever going to look like that again. And my face doesn’t want it to. I need all the uplift I can get. (Refer to previously-mentioned shrinkage.) So the curly, pert cut that looks like the perm my mother foisted on me when I was a kid is as close a nod as I will give to “trying” to look youthful. Frankly I have no choice; my straight hair caught my reflection in the mirror one day and sprung up into coils. It’s just who I am now.

The one thing I am having trouble letting go of are the handbags: my first Coach backpack — the most expensive purchase I made when I sold my duplex; a Carlos Falchi studded satchel that weighs four pounds empty (I refuse to schlep that much weight on one shoulder any longer); the elegant basket woven Cole Hahn tote with braided handles that my sis gave me for my 50th birthday; the dark green quilted suede bag with the chain strap that I bought at I. Magnin’s going-out-of-business sale; a silk tropical printed tote with bamboo handles from my first trip to Cabo San Lucas. I haven’t been using any of these in great rotation, but you may have to pry them from my cold, dead hands.

I’ve also revisited my jewelry drawer, which over the years has been crammed with impulse-bought costume jewelry like my brass and multi-colored skinny Indian bangles, boho dangly earrings, statement pins — not Madeline Albright-like statements, but little tin ones with messages like “Are We Having Fun Yet?” and toe rings. (I never was much of a bohemian; the toe rings always hurt my adjacent toes.)

There are a few classic sentimental pieces in there like the pearl necklace my aunt Ethel gave me, antique pins from England from my dear friend’s British mum, a silver gecko pin I bought in an antique store in the Czech Republic shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union. I’m earmarking them as inheritances for my nieces and their daughters, who will no doubt reject them as being bourgeois and who likely think the Soviet Union is actually kind of cool.

But as far as my new jewelry goes, I’m thinking “minimalism.” And this minimalism comes with a price. I’m following the advice of one of my readers who said, “Whenever it’s time for me to get rid of something that’s worn out or dated I replace it with something similar but of better quality.” So for me, now, quality is king. I recently bought a gorgeous necklace at the DeYoung museum in San Francisco — linked gold little square paillettes that shine and sparkle and elevate everything I wear it with. I also have a pair of gold Tiffany starfish earrings that I kept saving for some “special” day, which I am now wearing to the supermarket. And my gemstone rings are every day adornments, originally purchased because an astrologer told me they’d bring me luck. I guess they have. I’m lucky to be alive, to see what doesn’t work, and savvy enough to keep what does. And I may ask to be buried in these items. I don’t want some ungrateful heir rejecting them as bourgeois.

Chicago – Broadway Review

2016-08-28-1472342929-244921-Chicago__2.jpg
Amra-Faye Wright (front left) as Velma Kelly and company in Chicago on Broadway (photo credits: Jeremy Daniel)

Few Broadway shows can claim the milestone the musical Chicago celebrates now as the six time Tony Award winner continues into its twentieth year from its 1996 revival on Broadway. This makes Chicago the longest running American musical on Broadway and the second longest running show in Broadway history, second only to Phantom of the Opera.

Ahead of its time in breaking the fourth wall and dripping with stylish sophisticated cynicism that was in vogue in the 1970s, Chicago was an instant Broadway success story. The song and libretto feels as modern now as when created and continued Bob Fosse’s success after Pippin, another narrative breaker which also broke ground in fourth wall shattering as cast members talk about the show directly to the audience.

Fosse’s alluring and iconic choreographic style was lovingly re-vitalized in this revival by Ann Reinking, credited as choreographer ‘in the style of Bob Fosse,’ who also co-starred when it opened.

Ever inspiring and feeling even more timely now then when it was written, the female driven double murderess song and dancer is a romp through the corrupt prison and court systems of the 1920s. It feels as upbeat, smart and on point today as when it was written in 1975. You know a musical is intelligent, witty and connivingly devilish when its choicest songs about press manipulation, betrayal and selfishness could feel equally at home either on the Broadway stage or in any of the Presidential campaign trails in this election year.

2016-08-28-1472343045-7710747-Chicago__1.jpg
Bianca Marroquin as Roxie Hart

The staging is surprisingly simple for Broadway which often turns set design into its own character. But here the performers are on their own, front and center, as the orchestra is elevated on tiered seating behind them that fills the stage. The remaining space down stage and on the apron is where the entire show unfolds as the scantily clad perfect bodies of the cast create sexy, precise staging to sting us with politically powerful vignettes. The company doesn’t waste one extra move as they take us through the heroines’ storied and tantalizing dramas.

The stage is stripped almost as bare as the cast, yet the show sweeps you away on the sheer power of the music and libretto. Fosse’s sexy, halting, riveting choreographic style is in clear relief from the first step when the entire company starts the show with “All That Jazz,” “Class,” and “Cell Block Tango” a show stopper as the girls in prison explain how reasonable they all were in killing the one’s they loved.

Amra-Faye Wright as Velma Kelly, the tall voluptuous viper who is shortly dethroned in prison by her competitor, takes stage from her first step in “All That Jazz” and never lets go. Her great turns in “I Can’t Do It Alone” and “When Velma Takes The Stand” show a dynamic stage presence that held the theater every time she came forward, each of her numbers, charm and amaze.

Bianca Marroquin as Roxie Hart, was powerful, comedic and poignant as needed. Her self absorbed and spoiled character of the downtrodden wannabe who tries trading up in boyfriends results in murder when she’s dumped. Songs like “Me and My Baby,” and “Roxy” were funny, outrageous and emotional showing an excellent range. Tom Hewitt as the cold hearted lawyer Billy Flynn, gracefully croons his way like a narcissistic shark swimming towards his client’s victories. Numbers like “All I Care About,” which ended in a Zeigfield Folly-like fan dance, and another show stopper “Razzle Dazzle,” a play by play of how to manipulate the press, were immensely rewarding with a final note in one song he held for such an unusual duration it received its own applause.

Roz Ryan playing Mama Morton, the prison top dog, breaks the wall the most blowing kisses to members of the audience she likes and demanding attention when on stage particularly in “When You’re Good To Mama.”

Raymond Bokhour as Amos Heart does a magnificent turn as the naïve, simple ex-husband that Roxy still manipulates to help get her out of jail. He has some of the biggest laughs in the show as well as tears in a terrific rendition of ‘Mr. Cellophane’ lamenting his chronic invisibility. He has one of the best jokes of the night as the cast calls for their exit music, but I won’t reveal it here.

2016-08-28-1472343139-9030904-Chicago__3.jpg

Director Walter Bobbie has great fun with minimal stage technique keeping the performers moves ever interesting and challenging even having some climb up the sides of the proscenium as well as exiting through the orchestra’s seating and interact with the conductor during the show.

The show is a testament to the power of the music and libretto, which blaze out past the power of big sets and or staging. What started as a witty tear down of established story telling and personal mores has become a timeless classic poking fun at the sins and sinners we accept, if they’re beautiful, and the ideals we live by, like honesty and justice, we’re ready to give up if we choose to forgive two desirable criminals. And we do, rooting for them right to the end.

All That Jazz is the revival that is currently running at the Ambasador Theater on Broadway and 49th street as well as touring nationally and internationally. For more information on Chicago

Lorna Doone

Lorna Doone

Excerpt from Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor If anybody cares to read a simple tale told simply, I, John Ridd, of the parish of oare, in the county of Somerset, yeoman and churchwarden, have seen and had a share in some doings of this neighborhood, which I will try to set down in order, God sparing my life and memory. And they who light upon this book should bear in mind, not only that I write for the clearing of our parish from ill-fame and calumny, but also a thing which will, I trow, appear too often in it, to wit – that I am nothing more than a plain unlettered man, not read in foreign languages, as a gentleman might be, nor gifted with long words (even in mine own tongue), save what I may have won from the Bible, or Master William Shakespeare, whom in the face of common opinion, I do value highly. In short, I am an ignoramus, but pretty well for a yeoman. My father being of good substance, at least, as we reckon in Exmoor, and seized in his own right, from many generations, of one, and that the best and largest, of the three farms into which our parish is divided (or rather the cultured part thereof), he, John Ridd, the elder, churchwarden and overseer, being a great admirer of learning, and well able to write his name, sent me his only son to be schooled at Tiverton, in the county of Devon. For the chief boast of that ancient town (next to its woollen-staple) is a worthy grammar school, the largest in the west of England, founded and handsomely endowed in the year 1604, by Master Peter Blundell, of that same place, clothier. Here, by the time I was twelve years old, I had risen into the upper school, and could make bold with Eutropius and C

Superfreak: Bad Monkey

Superfreak: Bad Monkey

Frank and Eris’ dad, Bobs, a weirdly-smart scientist, is convinced the end of the world is coming any minute now. The Limit is the furthest they can go and still get back to the bunker which he’s built in the cellar together with an early warning system called Mustard the Slug hooked up to an organic computer. Bobs is putting the kids through a brutal training regime including picking weird flowers that make you vomit, and catapulting. They’re not allowed friends. Which is fine because they don’t have any. Everyone at school is calling them freaks. Frank and Eris are trying to hide it, but Frank is starting to worry: what if he really is a freak? And the end of the world is giving him nightmares. First it’s name-calling, then throwing things, then a fight and the Unit. The Unit is where all the weirdos live. After the Unit, Frank is sent to the school counsellor, Miss Fogg, to talk about his issues with his mother, who he insists is literally ‘lost’, though he can’t remember, not even if he thinks very hard. One boy in particular, Toad, is determined to make his life a misery. When Frank punches Toad and gets sent to the Unit, a band of bullied kids befriend him and he discovers Machine Club. For the first time in his life, Frank has friends and he’s happy. He doesn’t want his new friends to know about him and Eris having to do training in case they reject him too. But if it really is the end of the world, doesn’t he have a duty to save them?Frank’s dad also makes friends with another scientist called Sally, who is also mad about the end of the world. They get on like a house on fire. Except, where Bobs is planning to survive the end, Sally wants to stop it from happening. She’s got some extreme ideas about how you could force people to stop polluting. Frank starts to wonder. What if their dad and Sally are wrong? What if the future isn’t dark and death and frightening? Maybe they’re living like this for nothing. Sally bakes cauliflower scones and courgette cupcakes

About Me

am loving and kind, wise and authentic, peaceful, grounded, and happy. I have a witty sense of humor, am loyal and true, and feel deep connections to friends, family, animals, and the earth.

I’m here to express love and find my greatest satisfaction from helping others see and identify with their beautiful inner spirit, follow their inner knowing, and live their best life. As Rumi so eloquently stated, “Love is the cure, for your pain will keep giving birth to more pain until your eyes constantly exhale love as effortlessly as your body yields its scent.”

I love life, but don’t want to spend every weekend climbing peaks or doing adventure sports. Getting out for a walk, hiking in nature, a sunset walk on the beach, or taking my dog for a walk or swimming are all ways I enjoy being outdoors. I have rappelled, flown in helicopters, white-water rafted, lake kayaked, ridden horses, skied, and sailed on lakes, the Chesapeake Bay and in the BVI. Someday I’d love to parasail or paraglide.

I enjoy live music, festivals, dancing (although at the moment I’m only proficient at line dancing, but would love to learn other styles especially with a partner), and have a fondness for blues, acoustic, rock and roll, jazz, pop, and more. I enjoy the theater, musicals, shows, movies, art and expressions of creativity in many forms.

I find travel to be an exhilarating experience for how it allows me to taste and sample other cultures, people and lifestyles. I speak rusty Spanish and would love to revive it (bonus points if you can whisper sweet nothings in another language!).

What I’m Looking For

About you:
You are awake and aware, living consciously, generous and kind, respectful, demonstrative and affectionate, emotionally articulate, know who you are, reflective, wide open-minded, able to sense the beauty in life, connected, vibrant but not in need of constant stimulation, comfortable with time alone and silence, and easy to talk to. You are my future best friend and life partner, and someone I can trust implicitly.

About us:
I’m not looking for someone to complete me. I desire a deep, intimate connection, a conscious partnership, a soulful romantic mate to share my life with. Together we laugh, love, enjoy deep conversations or are silly. We respect and adore one another, see each other in our fullness, and know a real intimacy that comes from trust, empathy, compassion, authenticity and great chemistry. As we grow old, even as our bodies and minds age, we continue to enjoy each other’s presence, laugh at ourselves, and still feel our pulses quicken at the sight of one another.

Springsteen breaks his record for longest US show

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — It was another record-breaking night for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band with a few surprises thrown in at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. How This Fashion Zine Became a Cult Afropunk Keepsake

Kevin Harry

In a world where music-festival style has become crowded with fashion clichés, Afropunk, the annual celebration of music, arts, and black culture held at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park, has proven to be in a class of its own. From the regal crowns of dip-dyed locs through the sweeping hemlines of bell-bottoms jeans, the festival consistently brings out some of the most diverse, original, and eccentric dressers known to street style photography. While the attendees are certain to set the social-media sphere buzzing with their undeniable swag starting Saturday afternoon, there is one festivalgoer in the throng who plans to capture the bold and beautiful looks in a more time-honored way.

“I’m really inspired when I go to the Puerto Rican Day parade and all of the festivals uptown, the DanceAfrica festival near BAM over the Memorial Day weekend, the African arts festival on the 4th of July,” says photographer Kevin Harry. “But I think the ultimate one for me is Afropunk. You get this melting pot of people who are at their creative best, just fully themselves when they come to Afropunk.” Printed annually, his KH Zine has become a physical keepsake of the festival, one that offers honest, unfiltered portraiture to connect with the rebel spirit of the festival.  “When you’re at Afropunk you sense that people feel free. Free to be whoever they are without any judgement, without people looking at them with a raised eyebrow.”

Though the KH Zine, which made its debut in September 2014, began as a small passion project for Harry, a long-time lover of fashion and art with a ferocious appetite for vintage magazines, it has quickly developed a cultlike following all its own. The pocket-size periodical is currently stocked at cool art book shops such as Printed Matter in NYC, and Arcana: Books on the Arts in L.A. “I love to touch and feel paper,” says Harry who sees his work as a black style chronicle for future generations, similar to the kind now found in throwback editions of Ebony and Jet, but with a raw, unrehearsed appeal. “It’s important to print this magazine because people, myself included, love to collect hard copies. I made something where if you want to rip a page out, and tape it to your refrigerator; if you want to pin it to your inspiration board, you can.”

Dating – Then and Now

Turn to Page 3 or the gossip column of any newspaper or daily and there is bound to be an interesting news item of an impending engagement of a celebrity or at the very least some gossip about ‘who’s dating whom!’ Dating or the social practice of a couple being seen in public at social gatherings and events has been in place ever since humans became a civilized society of people. It is the precursor to ‘sexual selection of a partner’; much like how other species find partners or mates.

Parody Sums Up Why Christian Music Shouldn’t Just Make You Feel Good

A Chicago church’s viral video about Christian worship music is bringing up a good question ― do people ever stop to think about what they’re singing at church?

The parody video of a praise and worship singing session produced by Park Community Church revived a lively debate on Facebook Tuesday about what it means to worship God through song.

Contemporary Christian music has often been criticized for its lack of rawness and honesty, and for using jargon that would be unfamiliar to newcomers.

A worship leader in the video starts off with a song that makes liberal use of imagery, mimicking the way the same tired metaphors are written into many of Christian music’s top hits which often includes lyrics about mountains moving, souls on fire, and oceans rising

A visitor to the service is confused by the lyrics and at one point asked her friend, “What does it mean to be drowned in grace?”

“To be drowned in grace? Don’t think about it, just sing,” the friend replied.

Eventually, the lyrics of the song dissolved into gibberish, leaving the visitor thoroughly bewildered.

Park Community Church explained in a statement to The Huffington Post that the video was inspired by a series of teachings the church is doing on the Psalms, a book of ancient poetry and hymns found in the Bible. The skit is a critique of worship music that contains vague, unfamiliar language that is so focused on delivering a personal emotional experience that it takes God out of the picture.

“Worship is stirred not by the how we might make one feel in our music, but in declaring who our God is. There is nothing wrong with engaging the heart,” church leaders said in an email to HuffPost. “The hope in worship is that we engage the heart and the mind.”

Park Community Church isn’t the first to delve into this topic. Earlier this year, U2 rock star Bono expressed his frustration with modern Christian worship music in a documentary where he suggested that today’s Christian music pales in comparison to the full range of emotions explored in the Psalms.

“The psalmist is brutally honest about the explosive joy that he’s feeling and the deep sorrow or confusion,” the singer said in “The Psalms,” a Fuller Studio documentary. “And I often think, ‘Gosh, well, why isn’t church music more like that?’”

Critics have responded to Bono by pointing out that Christian pop and rock music isn’t meant to be “high art.” It’s simple so that a congregation can pick up the tune by the time the second chorus comes around. And in a world where there is so much judgement and suffering, it’s also meant to give people encouragement, comfort and hope.

But Christians who only listen to this kind of “safe and positive” worship music are missing out, according to Lisa Gungor, a Christian songwriter and musician.

“Honesty and truth telling are vital because it helps us heal, helps us connect, makes us human instead of masked pretenders. One person’s honest story can be the medicine for another,” Gungor wrote in a blog for The Huffington Post. “To skip out on lament like we find in the Psalms is not only a great disservice, but harmful to the human soul.”

Living with Art Series: Living Room Vignette – Artwork by Pablo Picasso & Michael Goldberg

2016-07-20-1469057591-5318660-Vignette_PicassoGoldbergLVRm103coolercolor.jpg

Picasso, Picasso, Picasso!!! How cool is that? I am still completely star-struck when it comes to some art and the artists that create it. It can still make me weep, laugh out loud, or just get super jazzed. And that’s a great thing; it’s one of the many reasons I love art and strive to incorporate it in my interiors, be it my house or yours. These three Picasso lithographs from the Fumeur Series, were conceived around August of 1964. There is speculation that the man drawn in these are actually self-portraits of Picasso since they all show a man wearing a striped blue shirt similar to the one that Picasso frequently wore, and he also happened to be a smoker. They are vibrant examples of his somewhat limited work in color acquatint making use of colors like yellow, blue, pink, and red.

Oddly enough, the other work in this room, Landscape (On the Way to New Lisbon, NY), by artist Michael Goldberg was also painted in 1964. Goldberg’s use of the same color palette as Picasso’s and the Abstract Expressionist style of this piece make it the perfect complement to Picasso’s pieces. An Abstract Expressionist painter from the New York School, Goldberg was a WWII vet who earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. As I learned about Goldberg, I found him to be an incredibly interesting man. Goldberg loved the improvisational nature of Jazz music, and the beauty of Italy, and I think that his work reflects his life. He produced art that includes everything from the brutality of the war he fought in to the beauty of music and the romantic countryside he loved.

To furnish this room I chose to look towards the modern architectural style of Ray & Charles Eames. The original Eames lounge chair and ottoman were re-upholstered in a metallic cream colored Edelman leather.

2016-07-20-1469058758-5482928-blog7_05.jpg

The cream colored Ceruse Oak console table underneath the three Picassos repeats the same color-way but has a more simplified and linear design. I added a second Ceruse Oak piece; a blue leather arm chair that is also reminiscent of mid-century design. To counter-balance these pieces, I wanted to bring in some more organic shapes. The two fantastic hand-cast bronze side tables are done in a Ferric Patina and add a rich brown color to the room. Both light fixtures also act as organic elements in the room. The design inspiration for the floor lamp is the seed pods from the Eucalyptus tree. The small bronze table lamp gives off a beautiful soft light that reflects the bronze and gilded gold metal finish. And the jute wall to wall floor covering provides a textural but neutral base for the room.

Beyoncé’s Makeup Artist Shows Us How To Do The Perfect Cat Eye

Sir John is responsible for some of Beyoncé’s most iconic looks ― the Met Gala, Lemonade, the entire Formation tour, to name just a few.

We were lucky enough to have him come into the HuffPost offices and chat with us about working with some of the biggest names in music, fashion and beyond.

When in Paris

A photo posted by S I R J O H N (@sirjohnofficial) on

He also answered a ton of beauty questions and demonstrated how to do an easy and flawless cat eye.

Here are some things we learned:

1) Want to make your makeup last all day? Practice duality.

“Whenever you’re using a cream foundation, use a powder foundation. Whenever you’re using a cream eye shadow or gel eye shadow, make sure you top it with a powder. Whenever you have that duality, that double layer, you get a Teflon face.”

2) Need to get rid of under-eye circles? Get movin’.

“Whenever you have dark circles under your eyes, all that is sluggish circulation. If you increase your circulation, running for 30 minutes a day, elevate your heart rate, you’re going to have better blood flow and you’ll have less dark circles.”

3) The best tool to remove makeup mess-ups are pointed Q-tips.

“Everyone’s like, ‘How do I perfect my wing?’ The answer is pointed cotton buds.”

Want more? Watch the whole stream below and see Sir John’s expertise in action:

If you want more Sir John, check out his site and his Instagram account. He’ll also be hosting a Master Class in NYC during Fashion Week.

Ok ladies, now let’s get in formation.

Exclusive Premiere Of Paper Pilot’s Moody Ballad, ‘The Weather’

2016-08-26-1472251622-3481495-paperpilots.png

The Los Angeles music scene is bubbling with fresh artists whose brains are overflowing with new sounds for thirsty ears. Hailing from Silverlake, indie rock/pop group Paper Pilots, lead by Justin Bocchieri, first received national attention in 2012 with their cover of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There” which was featured on the HBO series, True Blood. A rich synthesis of contemporary alternative rock and Britpop, Paper Pilots are garnering a fan base who are enamored with their velvety sounds.

Paper Pilots have become a local sensation performing at Echo Park Rising 2015, Chinatown Summer Nights, Blind Date LA, Hunnypot Radio, KROQ’s “Locals Only” at The Slide Bar, as well as notable venues such as The Satellite, The Bootleg Theater and The Troubadour. Their sound is reminiscent of a bygone era, haunting and emotive like something you may listen to on a Walkman while biking down a jacaranda-lined street.

Paper Pilot’s new track “The Weather” is paired with a monochromatic music video that is slickly decorated with geometric shapes and bisecting vectors. The hypnotic vocals and billowing instrumentals move through the air in rolling waves, gliding the listener’s mind along with ease. “The Weather” is the next step of Paper Pilot’s evolution, a boulder at the end of several stepping stones representing how far they have come and how much has been learned.

Produced by Grammy-nominated engineer and producer, Luke Tozour (Katy Perry, Adam Lambert, Jamie Cullum) and mixed by Grammy-winning engineer, Paul Hicks (Coldplay, Elliott Smith, Paul McCartney), “The Weather” has been meticulously crafted and perfected for maximum sonic bliss. The track explores a more melancholy side of the band than their signature “California Britpop” sound, but it is a welcomed departure from the usual.

Paper Pilots will undoubtedly find success with their steadily growing fan-base and highly evocative new single, “The Weather.” Paired with a stunningly simple music video, the band will soon experience a meteoric rise in the music world.

Birdmen

Birdmen

From acclaimed historian Lawrence Goldstone comes a thrilling narrative of courage, determination, and competition: the story of the intense rivalry that fueled the rise of American aviation. The feud between this nation’s great air pioneers, the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss, was a collision of unyielding and profoundly American personalities. On one side, a pair of tenacious siblings who together had solved the centuries-old riddle of powered, heavier-than-air flight. On the other, an audacious motorcycle racer whose innovative aircraft became synonymous in the public mind with death-defying stunts. For more than a decade, they battled each other in court, at air shows, and in the newspapers. The outcome of this contest of wills would shape the course of aviation history-and take a fearsome toll on the men involved. Birdmen sets the engrossing story of the Wrights’ war with Curtiss against the thrilling backdrop of the early years of manned flight, and is rich with period detail and larger-than-life personalities: Thomas Scott Baldwin, or “Cap’t Tom” as he styled himself, who invented the parachute and almost convinced the world that balloons were the future of aviation; John Moisant, the dapper daredevil who took to the skies after three failed attempts to overthrow the government of El Salvador, then quickly emerged as a celebrity flyer; and Harriet Quimby, the statuesque silent-film beauty who became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. And then there is Lincoln Beachey, perhaps the greatest aviator who ever lived, who dazzled crowds with an array of trademark twists and dives-and best embodied the romance with death that fueled so many of aviation’s earliest heroes. A dramatic story of unimaginable bravery in the air and brutal competition on the ground, Birdmen is at once a thrill ride through flight’s wild early years and a surprising look at the personal clash that fueled America’s race to the skies. Praise for Birdmen “A meticulou

El Cucuy! : A Bogeyman Cuento in English and Spanish (English and Spanish Edition)

So, you’ve been mouthing off to your parents a bit lately, not listening when they tell you to put your dirty socks in the hamper? They tell you that if you don’t shape up they are going to call the bogeyman to come and get you. You laugh. There is no such thing as a bogeyman.A sharp knock comes at the door. Nobody is around so you answer. Standing at the door is the oldest man you have ever seen-his back is hunched and one of his ears is big and red. He grabs for your arm and you know now that the bogeyman is for real. This particular bogeyman is called el Cucuy (pronounced coo-COO-ee). He comes directly from Mexico. They say with that big red ear that he can hear everything! In this cautionary tale, master storyteller Joe Hayes tells how two girls didn’t listen to their father’s warnings-just like you-and el Cucuy snatched them up. Of course, the story has a happy ending!Joe Hayes has become one of America’s premier storytellers, traveling around the country to schools, universities and professional conferences to tell stories from the Southwest. His bilingual Spanish-English tellings have earned him a distinctive place among America’s storytellers. I just want a guy who’ll be serious

About Me

Hi! I prefer to be called Troi. I'm a couple years younger than the age on here. I got two personalities, one who goes by October- she's bright and bubbly and happy, and then There's Troi- he's dark and emo and depressing. Troi is here at the time and will be for forever now.I'm still in highschool. I still live with my parent, so… Yeah. I'm shy and self conscious and a bit low on self confidence… Yeah, I know. I like anime and metal and playing vidoes games. I'm a childish girl, you know? I love to sing, play piano, make beats on the keyboard and I'm teaching myself how to play guitar at the current time. I got ADHD so I can be hyper at times or all the time. But I'm looking for a guy who's willing to be a serious boyfriend. I like a guy who'll be sensitive to my needs, likes to cuddle and play vidoes games. I like it when a guy is dominant during sex. And I want a guy who also likes anime and metalcore music too. I'm single, kinda lonely and young and looking for a thrill.

About Me

Wow…I am not a fan of this part. Let's see…I am honest, attractive, fun, and funny! I live life to the fullest. I am the glass is half full type. Honesty, communication, and compromise are essential to a successful relationship. I enjoy the great outdoors – like to hike, ski, workout, play tennis and golf. Love to travel to new and interesting places. I like to be spontaneous sometimes. Planning can be good too. I am single because I have not found the love of my life yet and I have faith that he is out there looking for me too. I have no regrets and believe that all past experiences are what makes each of us unique and it is good to learn from our mistakes to become better people. I am down to earth, loving, compassionate, passionate, and have a great sense of humor. I am a very straight forward type of woman – what you see is what you get – I like to keep it real. I'm friendly, sweet, attractive and pretty relaxed. I have a passion for creativity, and a curiosity of people from backgrounds that are not my own. I choose friends that are introspective, kind, and let me know when I'm being too serious!

About Me

Life is great… but I wish I had someone to share it with. I miss someone I have yet to meet. I enjoy an uncomplicated life, loyal and fun friends and a loving and very functional (thank God!) family. I am caring, honest, trustworthy and intelligent. I am comfortable in my own skin and that seems to make people feel comfortable around me. I have a good sense of humor and a kind heart. I believe that patience and communication are some of my most valued characteristics. I am not afraid of expressing my feelings and encourage others to do the same. I love music (from classical to blues), movies (especially old ones), photography, art, history, literature, entertaining, cooking (following recipes, actually!), dining out, traveling.

What I’m Looking For

I am looking for a man, not a boy. Someone who has a healthy dose of perseverance and ambition, yet someone fun, warm, versatile, somewhat adventurous, non-selfish, confident (but not cocky), with a very clear notion of integrity and family values. Someone that can enjoy a long visit to the museum, or some silly board game with friends, a fancy dinner as well as unpretentious breakfast. Someone who appreciates long conversations over a glass of wine, but can equally enjoy a quiet walk on the beach. Basically, someone who feels comfortable at "high-end" social occasions, as well as at "low end" casual hanging out in and tennis shoes. Yes, I am looking for that spark, however, I do believe that a friend-first relationship will ignite the spark at the right time. I am not looking to meet a lot of men, but that special person. And am definitely not into games.
